1) What is vvd and how does it work?

vvd (pronounced vivid) is an immersive worldbuilding and storytelling toolkit, designed to be both a creation tool and a publishing platform. It helps you capture and structure your inspiration and ideas, while allowing you to connect things both through writing and through visual means - and, on top of that, also publish your content and share it with whoever you want.

The first two things you need to learn about are Worlds and Cards.

A World in vvd is basically a massive project folder. The name is not meant to be taken literally - you can create entire universes within one World. Inside each World you will find a workspace full of our worldbuilding and storytelling tools.

The most important part of the World are your Cards. As you will learn, all of the systems in vvd are interconnected, with Cards as the source of everything. They are the building blocks of your creation. Everything connects to cards, and cards

Question 2

Tools

Accepted Answer

|| The Tools tab allows you to customize what tools you have at your disposal in your World, by either choosing from pre-existing ones, or making your own. Use the sections at the top to navigate.

Search through existing tools, categorised by what they are useful for - TTRPGs, Game Development, Writing, etc.
Click on a tool to learn more about it. You can try it out, add it to your Library, or make a new document with it straight away.
Some tools are available by default on new Worlds - Maps, Canvases, World Graphs, Timelines, Relation Trees, Notes…
Available tools are not exclusively vvd owned - users can make and publish their own tools too.

Question 3

Cards

Accepted Answer

What is a Card?

Cards are the building blocks of your world, and a key aspect of the vvd worldbuilding toolkit. Think of each card as page in the encyclopaedia of your creation.

You can make them as generalized or as specific as you want. Big stuff? Reusable things? Information that will return dramatically later? Make its own card. Tiny details that will never again see daylight? Put it in the "parent" card (akathe one that has all the information).

If you're unsure of what to write, and what questions each card should be answering, we have a whole community of worldbuilders willing to help! Click here for more information!

How to Create/Delete a Card

In your workspace, if you go on the World tab, you will find a vertical box on the left of your screen - that's your sidebar, aka document list. You can right click anywhere that's empty on the World page to create a new card, or, if you look at the bottom of the sidebar, there are a few options for new documents there.

Right clicking an item on the sidebar will bring up a few options, like deleting and renaming. It also allows you to create a new document nested under it.

When you're creating a new card, you'll have to choose what Type or Subtype it is. For more information about that, go to this article. If you change your mind about the type of a card you've already created, you can chang

Question 4

AI

Accepted Answer

|| This article will explain vvd's AI policy. In short - vvd is built for human creativity, and we believe AI's place in the world should be only as a tool, not a replacement for people.

Our Privacy Policy

1) What is vvd's stance on AI?

Artificial Intelligence is an extremely sensitive topic right now, and for good reason. While vvd has a pro-human point of view, without question, our stance on AI is more nuanced. There's an important distinction that needs to be made between using AI to generate images and text, and using AI as a tool. While the first aims to replace human imagination and skill, as it allows anyone with access to it to generate images and text regardless of their own skill, the latter offers a solution for optimising workflows that stifle creativity and drown it under slow and repetitive tasks.

The team behind vvd is made of writers, artists, and creators, so we know all too well the consequences that generative AI is having on the industry. So we promise:

We will NEVER allow AI to train using the content you have created on the website.
We use over 10% of our revenue to hire human artists. All the art you see on vvd, from the landing page to the public gallery, was all commissioned/licensed from real artists.
We have also committed 1% of all our revenue to remove carbon from the atmosphere.

2) What kind of AI Assistance does vvd have?

The AI present in vvd is optional to us

Question 5

Maps

Accepted Answer

How can I create a Map?

While vvd is made with worldbuilding in mind, it is more focused on the writing aspect, so creating maps from scratch is not something that it offers. When we talk about map creation in vvd, we are talking about creating a map document, not the image itself.

To have a map on your World, you can either use one of the publicly available images, or, if you've created a map elsewhere, you can import it as an image into vvd.

If you'd like suggestions on what map-making software to use, or tips on how to actually design a map, feel free to join our Discord server!

What can I do with Maps in vvd?

You can name the document, add text labels, create zones, and attach pins to specific locations. Maps are useful to visualize kingdom borders, and city or important landmark locations. You can also place a map as a block inside a card (though to do this you need to create the map document first).

Maps have layers, which allow you to create multiple different views. This is useful for example if you want to have a map view with zones for the world's regions and another with zones for the kingdoms, and you want to avoid overlapping them. Simply assign the desired zones, text, or pins to each layer. You can rename the layers to detail what each one contains.

If you've made a change to the map image and need to update your map in vvd, but don't want to lose all your zones and pins, you can swap out the image easily by clicking on "Background" in the menu

Question 6

Relation Trees

Accepted Answer

How do the Relation Trees work?

To start a new Tree, go to the World screen, and click the button at the bottom of the sidebar on the left, or right click anywhere that's empty.

You can create multiple versions of the same Tree (for example, one for the past, or one for the future) by clicking the "Add Variant" button at the bottom of the screen.

When you create a new Tree, you'll have an empty node waiting for you. A node is what represents a character in the tree. Nodes can be linked to cards, and they'll show the card name and image. You can also have unlinked nodes, in which case you can set a name for them (and in the future, a picture too). There are two ways you can add new nodes: by using one of the arrows on the top, bottom, left, or right of an existing node, or through the "Add node" button on the menu at the bottom.

How do the connections work?

It's important to note that connections made through card properties won't automatically create links in a Tree, just like links in a Tree won't automatically create connections in the cards themselves or in the Graph. The two systems are separate. This is a deliberate choice to allow our users more freedom when creating Trees.

When you click on one of the arrows surrounding a node to add a new node through that connection, you'll be prompted to choose a relationship type, or click on "Skip for now" to create a line without a named relationship. You're also able to click + drag to manually connect a point on
