Timelines

Timelines in vvd have been released to the public, but they are still in Beta so we're still working on fixing bugs and adding things.

Calendars

When you first create a Timeline, you will be asked if you want to use Earth style calendar, Generic (12months with 30 days each), or a custom one.

If you pick one but then change your mind, you can always edit it through the Calendar Settings button at the bottom of the screen. It allows you to customise the number of hours in a day, days in each month, and months in a year (and even the names of the months).

If you've made a custom calendar, you can save it to use it in another Timeline, by clicking the Presets button on the menu at the bottom.

Year Ranges

You can set a custom range for the timeline (what year it starts, and what year it ends), and even choose if you want to have negative number years or just a point zero as a starter.

Here it is important to know the difference between linear time and cyclical time. Linear time is what you'll be most familiar with, since it is what we use on Earth - there is a Year Zero and the numbers get bigger as they go away from it. Our suffixes are BC before zero, and AD afterwards (so this year is 2026 AD), but of course you can customise these to whatever fits your story. We also offer the option of cyclical time, with Eras! Each Era starts at zero and has a customisable set of years that it lasts for, before the next Era comes in. You can set suffixes per Era too, to make it easier when you're looking a the timeline itself.

Key Components

Ages and Events are what you'll use to mark things on your timeline. We've named them this for convenience, but you can use these systems for whatever you want. The important distinction between them is that Ages span multiple years (like a war or a plague) and are shown as a bar underneath the years line, and above it are Events, which are single date items (like an important wedding or birthday).

Each Age/Event has space for a short description and an image, and they can be linked to cards. You can also choose an icon and a color for them. Through the settings menu at the bottom you can alsochoose whether you want to display dates on these down to the hour, day, or year.

Controls

Using your scroll wheel by itself enables you to move sideways along the line. You can zoom in/out by using Ctrl/Cmd+Scroll or by using the buttons on the bottom right. Zooming out will make your line "shrink" so more events fit in on your screen at once, while zooming in will expand it and space things out.
