# Maps

### How can I create a Map?

While vvd is made with worldbuilding in mind, it is more focused on the writing aspect, so creating maps from scratch is not something that it offers. When we talk about map creation in vvd, we are talking about creating a map document, not the image itself.

To have a map on your World, you can either use one of the publicly available images, or, if you've created a map elsewhere, you can import it as an image into vvd.

If you'd like suggestions on what map-making software to use, or tips on how to actually design a map, feel free to join our Discord server!

### What can I do with Maps in vvd?

You can name the document, add text labels, create zones, and attach pins to specific locations. Maps are useful to visualize kingdom borders, and city or important landmark locations. You can also place a map as a block inside a card (though to do this you need to create the map document first).

Maps have layers, which allow you to create multiple different views. This is useful for example if you want to have a map view with zones for the world's regions and another with zones for the kingdoms, and you want to avoid overlapping them. Simply assign the desired zones, text, or pins to each layer. You can rename the layers to detail what each one contains.

If you've made a change to the map image and need to update your map in vvd, but don't want to lose all your zones and pins, you can swap out the image easily by clicking on "Background" in the menu at the bottom of the screen.

###### Zones

With vvd, you can create zones on the map image, to delineate areas like kingdoms or regions. You can also attach these zones to cards, so you can write more about them.

Zone creation works with vertices/points rather than freely drawing. You can place as many points as you want to show the borders with as much or as little detail as you want. To finish creating the zone, and close the area, you need to click on the first point again. Afterwards you can still edit the shape and add or remove vertices. Just click on "Add Point" on the menu that appears when you click on the finished zone to add a point, and if you want to delete one instead, select that point and then press Shift+Delete.

When two zones are close together, you have the ability to merge their borders, so that you can synchronize them and move them easier. You can do this by dragging the points of one zone over another. If you want to unlink zone borders, press Shift on your keyboard and drag the points away from each other.

Zone customization involves changing name font, size, and color, as well as changing the color of the zone itself, plus patterns and opacity.

###### Pins

To create pins on the map, you can right-click, or simply drag a card from the card list into the map.

Pin customization involves changing the size and selecting an icon to be used instead of the card image.
