# Cards

### What is a Card?

Cards are the building blocks of your world, and a key aspect of the vvd worldbuilding toolkit. Think of each card as page in the encyclopaedia of your creation.

You can make them as generalized or as specific as you want. Big stuff? Reusable things? Information that will return dramatically later? Make its own card. Tiny details that will never again see daylight? Put it in the "parent" card (akathe one that has all the information).

If you're unsure of what to write, and what questions each card should be answering, we have a whole community of worldbuilders willing to help! [Click here for more information!](https://vvd.crisp.help/en/article/community-1ig1hqb/)

### How to Create/Delete a Card

In your workspace, if you go on the World tab, you will find a vertical box on the left of your screen - that's your sidebar, aka document list. You can right click anywhere that's empty on the World page to create a new card, or, if you look at the bottom of the sidebar, there are a few options for new documents there.

Right clicking an item on the sidebar will bring up a few options, like deleting and renaming. It also allows you to create a new document nested under it.

When you're creating a new card, you'll have to choose what Type or Subtype it is. For more information about that, go to [this article](https://vvd.crisp.help/en/article/card-types-templates-44at3z/). If you change your mind about the type of a card you've already created, you can change it by clicking the card type in the top right of the card window. No need to delete it and start over!

### Card Components

Cards can have a name and an alias - for example, a card's name may be "Carter Smith", but you may want to set the alias as just "Carter". This helps with linking that card in the text of another card - that way you don't have to use the full card name for the link to be successful.

You can choose to have Properties on a card, or not. To find out more about Properties, [click here](https://vvd.crisp.help/en/article/properties-umr3at/).

Cards have an image by default. You can change, crop, or rotate the image by hovering over it. You can also remove the image. We don't have an exact pixel size requirement for card images, but for portrait-mode, the ideal ratio is a 3:4, while for landscape it is 16:9.

On the body of the card you can have a variety of blocks, from text and media to tools like Relation Trees and Timelines. You can set up Card Type Templates that will be used whenever that type of card is created. For more information, [click here](https://vvd.crisp.help/en/article/card-types-templates-44at3z/).

### AI Assistance

We've got a special kind of AI on vvd which helps our users in the process of writing and creating cards. It is important to note that this is not generative AI, and it is completely optional to use,and easy to disable. For more information on our AI policy, [click here](https://vvd.crisp.help/en/article/ai-1e261u7/). The two AI-assistant tools that exist are the following:

* Guided Templates - some card types have specific ones, while others will only have the Freeform available. Using a Guided Template allows you to just pour your unstructured thoughts into the page, and then when you're done it will reorganise them for you to make them neater. Due to the way they work, the card has to be completely empty, with no blocks or anything written. Guided Templates will not generate ideas for you or alter what you've said beyond just restructuring. They are a completely optional feature, if you don't want to use them you can just select a text block and start writing.
* Entity Detection - when you're writing in a page and you're mentioning place names, person names, etc, that have not been created as cards yet, Entity Detection will, as the name suggests, detect them., and highlight them - suggesting the type they should be and allowing you to just click on the highlighted item and create a card for it through there. That is the full extent of what it does. It should not be confused with the card auto-linking feature.
